Installation och bandplan

It is relatively easy to install a repeater system yourself. What usually causes some problems is the selection of BAND / frequency and finding the direction of the base station. But there are simple tools.

It is important when choosing a repeater to find out what frequency and band the phone connects to. Is it 800Mhz, 900Mhz, 1800Mhz, 2100Mhz or 2600Mhz? Usually there are 4G at 800Mhz, 2G / 3G / 4G at 900Mhz and 3G at 2100Mhz Voice calls usually go over the 2G and 3G network but the operators have also started to run voice calls over 4G (VoLTE). All phones are usually in AUTO mode and automatically jump between the different bands and technologies 4G, 3G, 2G. If the phone finds a 4G network, the 4G signal strength will always be displayed. 4G is only DATA not CALL except at the sites where the operator runs VoLTE.

Usually there are problems with telephony and voice calls that you want to solve with a repeater installation. Then you install a 900Mhz or 2100Mhz repeater. TELE2 also allows repeater installation for 1800Mhz band 3 and 2600Mhz band 7 where TELE2 runs VoLTE. Here is a simple instruction on how to identify which band the phone connects to. Many times you will find both 2100Mhz and 900Mhz. We recommend that you then choose a 900Mhz (band 8) repeater in case 3G / 4g is available on that band. 900Mhz is a lower frequency which has a better wave propagation and permeability through walls and floors. Several operators run 3G / 4G at 900Mhz. A lower frequency also gives lower radiation and SAR value, which is an important health aspect. Otherwise, 3G on 2100Mhz Band 1 is the most common. Today, 4G is overloaded in many places and 3G HSPDA + provides faster and more stable data speeds.

The easiest way to find out what frequency the phone is at is to install the Cellmapper app. The first screenshot shows the phone in 4G mode with Tele2 SIM. Here, Tele2 runs 4G on GSM900 Band 8. You get both voice calls and 4G data when installing a 900Mhz repeater. The second screenshot shows the phone in 3G mode. Here, Tele2 3G runs on UMTS2100 band 1. A 2100Mhz repeater is installed.
Tele2 4G på 900Mhz
Tele2 4G på 900Mhz
Tele2 3G på 2100Mhz
Tele2 3G på 2100Mhz
If the Cellmapper app does not work, use a more complicated method. You put the phone in Service Mode. Use the following commands. Measure both with the 4G on and off. Turn off WiFi. The Samsung phones usually show frequency and bands in clear text. It does not Iphone. The example above shows Downlink Frequency 3084. You use the frequency calculator tool at Cellmapper.net. The same procedure if the phone displays the UARFCN number.

Here we see that the iPhone is located on Downlink 956.8Mhz. It is Telia's frequency band at BAND 8 900Mhz. The Samsung phone shows in plain text WCDMA900 (band 8) and WCDMA2100 (band 1) Choosing a repeater is thus easy. If you want to know which band the phone connects to on 4G LTE you turn ON 4G and redo the procedure.
